Welcome to the site for Peace Corps At 50, an anniversary story project.

From the beginning, we knew that celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps in one volume would not work. The book would either be too big to pick up, or fail utterly to capture the textures and flavors of the Peace Corps experience. So we started with the more ambitious idea of creating three volumes representing three regions: the Americas and the Caribbean; Africa; Asia and the Pacific.

How very early Peace Corps of us! Where would Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Bulgaria go? We obviously needed a fourth volume and some way to define it. Geopolitics is never tidy. Rather than squeeze everything else into some strange geography, we decided to collect stories from Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Russia in a volume entitled After the Cold War. It’s not exactly a region, but for the purposes of this project, we’re calling it one.

Our goal is to collect and publish stories—in print and online—that capture the spirit of the Peace Corps. This site is our invitation to you—RPCVs, staff, and invisible others—to write up your memories and send them along.
